Why is checking or changing your K-9 dryer motor brushes important?

So, let's start with some basics, as not everyone is as familiar with the internal workings of the K-9 dog dryer blowers as others.  The K-9 II and K-9 III units each have 2 electrical motors inside.  Each motor contains 2 brushes, (or one set of brushes).

(FYI: K-9 dog dryer blowers are made by the Electric Cleaner Company in Wisconsin, USA.)

If your are unfamiliar with what the brushes look like, see the picture with this post.  The set of new brushes, still in the packaging, are in the center.  The other sets of brushes are extremely worn down and should have been replaced before ever getting to this point.

So what do these bushes do and why is it important to check and replace them periodically?

Carbon brushes in electric motors are engineered to wear over time—that's by design. They act as a sacrificial component, taking the wear so that the commutator, also called the armature, (the rotating part at the motor's core) stays protected from damage. By checking and replacing brushes regularly, you maintain steady power delivery to your K-9 dryer, keep the motor running at peak performance, and avoid the costly consequences of neglect: diminished efficiency now, or a completely failed motor later.

Here is why checking and maintaining electric motor brushes is essential:

1. Prevents Motor Damage

  • Protects the Commutator: Carbon brushes are designed to be soft so they wear down rather than the hard metal commutator ring they press against.
  • Prevents Scratches and Damage: If brushes are ignored and fully wear down, the metal holder or the spring can rub against the armature, causing irreversible, expensive damage which may require the motor replacement.

2. Ensures Performance and Efficiency

  • Maintains Constant Electrical Contact: Brushes carry current from the stationary part to the rotating part. Worn-out or damaged brushes lead to poor contact, reduced motor power, low torque, and erratic performance, thus your dryer not working at its peak efficiency.
  • Maintains Proper Spring Tension: Regular checks ensure that the springs holding the brushes against the commutator are still providing adequate pressure. Weak springs cause the brushes to bounce, leading to poor conductivity and increased heating.

3. Minimizes Unplanned Downtime

  • Prevents Sudden Failure: Scheduled inspections (preventive maintenance) allow for replacement before the tool fails unexpectedly on the job.
  • Reduces Emergency Repairs: Proactive maintenance keeps the motor running within its specified parameters, avoiding costly emergency shutdowns.

4. Reduces Excessive Heat and Electrical Damage

  • Prevents Excess Sparking: Worn, misaligned, or poorly seated brushes can cause excessive sparking. This can overheat the armature and cause damage to the motor's internal components, surrounding wiring, and possibly any circuitry.
  • Clears Carbon Dust Build-up: As brushes wear, they produce carbon dust that can accumulate inside the motor, leading to electrical shorts or mechanical issues.

Regularly checking brushes—ensuring they are long enough, clean, and seating properly against the commutator—extends the overall life of the motor.

How to tell when the brushes need to be changed?

On the K-9 dryer units, if the brushes are 50% or less of the original size, They are candidates for replacement.    Other key indicators of when brushes need to be replaced can include reduced power, excessive sparking, irregular performance, and/or a burning smell.

How often should I check my brushes or have them checked?

This can vary with the amount of usage the dryer is getting.  At a minimum, they should be checked annually.  The cost of new brushes is far less than the price of a new dryer, in a worse case scenario.  If the dryers are being used by a professional grooming shop where it is used and running most days and almost all day, the brushes should be checked more frequently, every 6 months or less, depending on the overall usage.

The K-9 dryer units, by Electric Cleaner Company, are good units and are excellent tools for groomers and dog / cat washers, but like any other tool, they do require some general maintenance.   I have seen too many units requiring expensive repairs because they simply failed to check the brushes on a regular basis.
